About Us

Founded in 1962, Irish Import Shop started out as a room in an apartment, which was quickly outgrown, and moved into a storefront on Beverly Boulevard and Normandie, the hub of the Irish community in Los Angeles at that time. We have been at our present location near the corner of Melrose and Vine Street since 1988.

People enjoy the fact that walking into our homey shop feels just like being in Ireland. We play traditional Irish music and offer free Wi-Fi. Future plans include creating a little space for customers to sip on a complementary cup of Irish tea, check their emails, and chat with people from the local community. There is plenty of free parking on-site, so come and experience the feeling of fàilte. Visit us at various events through the Southland, as well.

Our Owner

Tommy Mac, aka Thom MacNamara, is well-known in the Irish community of Los Angeles. He has worked as an executive director for the Celtic Arts Center over the years, and received a Certificate of Commendation from the Los Angeles City Council for his efforts. He was the Producers Guild International Committee's representative to Ireland, and has been the bass drummer for the Los Angeles Police Emerald Society for over a decade. Tommy has also produced the annual Celtic Concert Series at the Ford Amphitheater for 10 years. Taking over the Irish Import Shop seems like a good fit for him.

Although Tommy is proud of his heritage, he is the only member of his family who was not actually born in Ireland. He was "The Yank" born on Flag Day in Bronx, New York, and his parents told him all of the American flags their neighbors flew from their windows every June 14th were to honor him as "The Yank." His mom was from Ballina Mayo, and his dad was from Lisdoonvarna Clare. His sister and brothers were born in Dublin before they all immigrated to the United States. Tommy grew up in a very Irish neighborhood in the Kingsbridge section of the Northwest Bronx and worked at Pat Mitchell's Irish Food Store when he was in high school, so he is no stranger to the business.

Anne Colburn, who is now retired and living back in Dublin, ran the shop for 15 years before passing the baton on to Tommy in October of 2016. "I have great admiration for Anne, and I am very thankful for her continued support as I take the reins of this celebrated shop. It is my hope that I can continue her fine reputation for creating a little bit of Ireland in the madness of Hollywood."
